Romania
In 2000, Ion Iliescu was re-elected president.
Failure to push ahead sufficiently reforms meant that the
country was not on the list of new EU members.
But EU leaders have agreed to sign an accession treaty with Bucharest
in April 2005, and Romania could join the union in 2007 if the reform programme picks up.
Mr Tariceanu has stated his main aim as to achieve EU membership in 2007.
He identifies the key challenges as fighting from corruption, reducing taxes and easing poverty.
