Conditions

All this time Croatia has tried to fulfil all the conditions proposed by the EU, but there were problems concerning cooperation with The Hague Tribunal. The Tribunal is demanding from Croatia to bring Gotovina to The Hague where he would be judged for crimes against humanity. We cannot say how justified these accusations are. The Tribunal thinks that Croatian endeavours in catching Gotovina are not as hard as they should be. Croatia will try to cooperate as much as possible. This is the main reason for the temporary delay in negotiations; one more being the poor economic development.

Croatia is trying to adjust to the way the EU functions. Our laws have been aligned with the European ones, but they should be changed even more after the accession.

One of the important things is the building of Zagreb-Dubrovnik motorway by means of which better traffic connections within Croatia, but also between the middle and south Europe will be achieved. The motorway also helps in developing the tourism that holds great importance in the process of joining the EU because of the fact that our accession to the EU is greatly supported by the countries whose citizens often visit the Adriatic (Italy, Austria, Hungary) than by the countries situated more further away.

In fact there are not many unfulfilled conditions but it takes time to see how far we are ready to go and cooperate with the Union. The most important condition to fulfil is to hold a referendum for the Croatian citizens with 50% pro union.
