Learning a language

is like saying goodbye

to someone you really care about.

It's like writing without inspiration,

painting without a paintbrush.

It's like playing basketball without a ball,

being on stage for the first time,

like moving abroad without knowing anyone.

It's like studying things you don’t understand,

dancing without rhythm,

singing without voice.

But then gradually

it's like finally getting enough sleep,

not being alone and having someone to talk to.

It's like beating COVID-19,

finishing 8th grade,

receiving confirmation at your church

and celebrating with your friends,

for the first time in a while.

And then one day it's like opening the door

to a new start.
