At Ivan Goran Kovačić primary school we learn of life. This is a democratic school, a school in which everyone learns and works in a pleasant atmosphere and where everyone can achieve their maximum potential.

Number of classes (1st – 8th grade): 18 (10 classes from grades 1 – 4, 8 classes from grades 5 – 8), 2 composite classes in our branch school in Donja Vrba.

Number of employees: 47: 33 teachers – 10 grade class teachers (from 1st to 4th grade), 23 class teachers (from 5th to 8th grade), 3 experts (pedagogue, psychologist and a librarian), headmaster and 10 other employees.

The school works in 2 shifts in a 5 day work week.

In addition to regular programs, elective subjects and extracurricular activities, particular attention is paid to the project teaching of ecology, human rights, the fight against addiction and violence, entrepreneurship, ICT and reading skills development.

SCHOOL HISTORY 

Primary School „Ivan Goran Kovačić“ is the oldest primary school in Slavonski Brod and is one of the city’s oldest landmarks („the birthplace“ of the city’s schools). The school building is situated in the city centre and was built and started work on the 19th of November 1923 under the name „Primary Boy's School“ because it was solely a school for boys and it is still today remembered as the „boy school“.

During the Second World War the school was renamed „National Boys School“ and after the war it was changed to „The First Seven-year School“ for boys and girls. Girls would receive their own building in 1949/50 (known as Primary School A. Mihanović) so the school once again became a „boy school“. It received its current name in 1959 after the famous Croatian poet Ivan Goran Kovačić.

After two world wars, an earthquake and decay of time itself the city's oldest school had become unsuitable for its purpose. With help from the Croatian Ministry of Education, the Regional government of Brod-Posavina County and the City of Slavonski Brod the school was renovated in 1997. In 2005 construction of a new wing and the school's new sport's hall was completed. In 2006 the branch school in the village of Donja Vrba was built.

INTERESTING DETAILS

Despite the sub optimal conditions the students and teachers work in the school has achieved above average accomplishments in a wide range of activities. We have had success in national and regional competitions and events. These include:

• Students regularly compete in all subjects and a large number of students regularly compete at national level competitions in IT, workshop creations, photography, Croatian language, LIDRANO (State parade of literary, drama and newspaper work), biology, history, the GLOBE (The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) project, astronomy and sports competitions (table tennis)

• Computer classes have been a part of the school programme since 1986 and school was organiser and host to the first Regional Competition in Computing in 1995

• Significant number of highly qualified teachers: in our school there are 3 teacher mentors, one advisor (and at least double that amount of teachers that satisfy criteria for promotion to mentor status) and three regional professional committee directors (Croatian language, religion and the regional professional committee of directors of Brod-Posavina County) who are currently on staff as teachers.

• Continuous high quality professional advancement of all employees (organised by national Education and Teacher Training Agency - ETTA or school itself: Quality School – school quality programs, Stop Violence Among Children, IT advancement, entrepreneurial competency development of teachers as well as students...)

• High quality creative and proactive student and teacher work – official recognition from the Minister of Education on the 11th of October 2001 and recognition from the regional government  in 2005 as well as recognition from the City of Slavonski Brod in 2006

• Cooperation with the Faculty of Educational science in Slavonski Brod, Slavonski Brod Tourist Board, Art gallery, theater etc.

• Long standing initiators and participants in international projects our students take part in with students from other countries:

• From 2000 Project Stage: English language learning, internet use, acquainting one's self with other cultures and educational systems

• On the 8th of March 2002 we cooperated with the organisation S.A.V.E from the USA which is dedicated to fighting school violence and violence in the local community.
